I practice holistic medicine and I’m often asked what that means. Here’s how I define it.
The Gift of Time. I set aside 90 minutes for the first visit to permit time to listen to my patient’s story. This way, I learn the many different factors influencing my patient’s well-being and can get to the root causes. I can’t do this in twelve, even 20 minutes. Sometimes a potential patient will ask why my appointments are longer than usual. I explain that my conventional medical training taught me to listen for symptoms then quickly order tests or write prescriptions. This model lets physicians see a large number of patients in a short amount of time. However, drugs and surgery silence symptoms, but rarely change the underlying disease. This never made sense to me, and I sought a different approach.
Restoring Health. I don’t fight disease. I help my patients restore … Read More
We are in the midst of a paradigm shift. Our understanding of health and medicine is broadening, and both practitioners and patients are embracing a holistic, integrated approach. Patients are becoming more informed via the internet, word of mouth, and diligent research that there is something significantly missing from medicine in the current standard of care in the American healthcare system. What they are finding, and flocking to, is a group of physicians that have likewise embraced this broadened approach to medicine. Some of these practitioners adopted a more holistic approach after realizing that there was something missing from their medical training, and sought out post-graduate trainings to complement their understanding of holistic medicine. Other practitioners discovered their passion before entering medical school, and pursued the study of naturopathic medicine.
So this begets the questions, What is Naturopathic Medicine, and where does Naturopathic Medicine fit in the paradigm shift?

The Western medicine community recently asked the question: Will Alternative Healthcare, a.k.a. Holistic, Metaphysical, Energy or Mind, Body, Spirit healing and Western Medicine (WM) merge? This question implies there is reason to wonder and/or we need to consider the benefits a merger might create. The consideration of merging Holistic, Metaphysical, Energy or Mind, Body, Spirit healing and Western Medicine is analogues to comparing apples to oranges. The only comparison between apples and oranges is that they are both fruit–but the comparison ends there. Holistic, Metaphysical, Energy or Mind, Body, Spirit Healing and Western Medicine is diametrically polar opposites with nothing in common, except the subject (you). I will explain.
In order to understand the ideology of Western Medicine, you need to examine the language used by doctors and researchers. Their choice of words reveals their belief systems and the models they use to understand the way they think healing works. … Read More

Homeopathy is an alternative medicine system pioneered and developed by a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, around the end of the 18th century. It is a science of acknowledging the wholeness of a person, not just the ailments or problems- but the mind, body, spirit, soul and psychology of a person affected when there is illness present. The science does not alienate the disease from the person; rather the focus is laid on the origin, progress, impacts, and effects of the sickness on the individual. Homeopathic medicines, or ‘remedies’ being very different from the allopathic or over the counter ones, stimulate the body’s self-regulating mechanisms to initiate the healing process.
This philosophy believes that when a person is attacked by illness, it not only affects his physical body but the totality of him, i.e. the whole person is sick: body, mind, and spirit. The body manifests symptoms of illness but it … Read More
In general, when people use the term fitness, they are referring to a state of sound physical health. Physical health, in turn, is defined in terms of strength, endurance, and freedom from illness. In recent years, however, the concept of fitness has expanded. A concept of holistic fitness has emerged from the broader holistic perspective on health and healing.
The holistic perspective on health and healing is multidimensional. It assumes that the body, mind, and spirit are all connected in a way that is difficult to separate. Thus, poor health is not just a matter of injury or disease. When healing is needed, people who subscribe to this approach are open to a wide range of therapies. They may opt for a combination of conventional and non-conventional medical treatments. Or, they might consider an intervention that belongs to an altogether different healing tradition. The key requirement is an approach that … Read More

Holistic medicine is intended to focus on a person’s whole being. This provides a more all-inclusive approach to healing and focuses on spiritual, mental, emotional and physical wellness.
